BARBERTON -- Peter Paul Ligas, 90, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2018. Peter was born in Barberton, Ohio, and has been an area resident all his life. Peter was proud of his service on the USS Harwood during the Korean War and his 39-year career at Goodyear Aerospace.
Peter was an avid polka dancer, gardener and hunter. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his nine children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peter was known for his homemade candy, nine kinds of fudge and simple acts of generosity, including paying the bill when he saw a military family eating at a restaurant.
He is preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Mary Ligas; son Christopher Ligas; daughters Karen Bechdel and Susan Ligas; four brothers and six sisters; and his former wife Margaret Genet.
Peter is survived by his children Peter (Marlene) Ligas, Michael (Barb) Ligas, Kathy (Karl) Koppes, Ben (Sherri) Ligas, Frank (Jean) Ligas and Beth (Dave) Douglas; 38 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by his dear companion, fellow traveler, polka partner and caregiver when needed, Patricia Stout.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1263 Shannon Ave., Norton. Fr. Robert Jackson, celebrant. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Calling Hours Monday from 4-8 PM at the SILVA – HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton. Memorials may be made to the National Audubon Society.
