BARBERTON---Bernard Eugene Gerbec Sr., 82, passed away August 31, 2014. Bernie was born in Barberton and lived there all his life. He retired from the Babcock and Wilcox Co. after 30 years of service. He attended Barberton and Norton Schools and school in Spartanburg, SC while his dad was in the Army.


Bernie was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church now Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He was also a member of the former Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart and the K.S.K.J. Lodge. He was also an active member of the Barberton Band Boosters for many years. Bernie was a proud Army Veteran during the Korean War, serving in Alaska for two years.


Preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Antoinette; Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Ann (Polacek); sons Bernie (Sandra) of Greer, S.C., Tom (Debbie) of Manchester and John (Susan) of Mogadore; daughters Barbara (Jim) Kulton of Cuyahoga Falls, Betty England of Austin, TX, Cathy (Mike) Baughman of Rapid City, SD and Margie (Dale) Ezzell of Summerville, SC; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Rita Polacek; and several nieces and nephews.


Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1263 Shannon Ave., Norton. Rev. Robert Jackson celebrant. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Calling Hours Wednesday from 5-8 P.M. at the SILVA-HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton, where prayers will be said Thursday morning at 9:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Prince of Peace.
