Betty Jane (Garrett) Jamison was born in Oak Hill, West Virginia on November 9, 1934 and was the last surviving sibling in a family of 18. She graduated from Collinwood High School in 1952 and married Lacy Jamison in 1953. The two were married for 63 years—until his passing in 2016. Lacy and Betty adopted two boys, Mark and Brian, biological brothers, and later lost a child of their own, Stephen, a few days after his birth.
Betty studied computers before computers were cool, becoming a key punch operator and later working at the architecture firm Glaus, Pile, Dehaven. She was a skilled seamstress—an artisan, really—and—later in life—sold handmade clothes for Barbie and American Girl dolls in craft shows across several states. She enjoyed travel and visited most of the countries of Europe and even North Africa with her eldest son Mark.
More than anything, she loved her grandkids, Paul and Sondra. She literally screamed when her son Brian and wife Susan announced they were pregnant and was waiting at the airport with a sign to welcome their adopted daughter Sondra. She took the notion of spoiling her grandkids to a whole other level.
Perhaps the thing she loved most, though, were the Garrett family reunions, held once a year for over fifty years in locations all across the country. She and Lacy had never missed a reunion until his passing in 2016. Betty asked to be cremated. Half of her ashes will be spread at Greenlawn Cemetery, where the son she lost is buried, and the other half will join the ashes of her husband in the river he loved in West Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 4:00 -5:30 p.m. at the Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fayetteville Food Pantry, PO Box 735, Fayetteville, WV 25840.
