Dorothy E. (Hargis) Mayes

Dorothy E. Mayes, 92, passed away peacefully May 19, 2023 at The Inn at Coal Ridge Assisted Living Facility where she resided for almost three years.

Dorothy was born in Gruetli-Laager Tennessee where she graduated from Grundy County High School in 1948.  In 1949 she married Roy Wince Mayes and they moved to Cleveland Ohio.  In 1950, Dorothy gave birth to their first of two daughters.

Dorothy lived and worked in the northeast Ohio area for 72 years.  At the age of 48 years young, she attained a Registered Nursing License from Cuyahoga Community College and later went on to get her Baccalaureate degree from Dyke College.  Dorothy eventually retired from Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.

Preceded in death by her parents Rosa Wichser-Hargis and Robert A. Hargis; sister Hilda Hargis-Henderson and brother Delbert Hargis; she is survived by her two daughters Teresa A. Mingle and LaDora K. Rose;  four grandchildren Rob Mingle, Brent Mingle, Audrey Rose-Eisenberg, and David Rose; and twelve great grandchildren Ty Mingle, Elena Gartrell, Katy Gartrell, Blake Mingle, Amber Mingle, Andrew Mingle, Adrian Mingle, Andrew Eisenberg, Jamari Eisenberg, Toni Eisenberg, Ella Eisenberg, Elizabeth (Biz) Eisenberg.

Dorothy was a hard worker in all aspects of life.  She lovingly devoted over 60 years of service as a Sunday School Teacher for small children in several Churches of Christ.  Over her life in northeast Ohio she attended Shaw Ave. Church of Christ, Forrest Hills Church of Christ, Euclid Church of Christ, and Barberton Church of Christ.

Dorothy loved her family, never missed a birthday, and made fantastic meals every Sunday after church right before Cleveland Browns games.  She enjoyed gardening and helping others accomplishing much in both categories.  When asked how she was able to get so much done, she would say “little by little”.

Dorothy's Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at the Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton. Pastor Keith Welch officiating. Calling Hours Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial at Swiss Colony Cemetery in Tennessee.
