J. W. (Wayne) Matuch
Wayne, our loving father, husband, brother and friend transitioned to be with his Heavenly Father on December 19, 2024. He was born to Joseph and Mary (Albright) Matuch on April 4, 1946 in Wadsworth, Ohio. He grew up in Norton and graduated from Norton High School, "Class of '64." Wayne continued his education at Kent State University, graduating in 1969 with a BA in Political Science, and then served his country in the U.S. Army. After completing his military obligation, Wayne returned home and was hired in at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co where he spent 39-1/2 years, the last 24 years as Police Chief. He was a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and long standing member of the American Society for Industrial Service (ASIS).
In May 1994, he married Barbara Polovick. Together they traveled, enjoyed time with their families (especially the grandkids) and friends, and, for 19 years, spent most weekends at their Tappan Lake cottage enjoying nature at its best. He spent his retirement years travelling, golfing, exercising at the gym, working in his yard and watching/feeding the birds.
Wayne felt a strong sense of community service. For many years he worked the election polls, served multiple terms on his homeowners' association board and, most importantly, volunteered at Summa Barberton Parkview Infusion Center, Summa Barberton Same Day Surgery, and the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center. He was passionate about being with those at the "end of life," especially the privilege of honoring veterans. Wayne firmly believed that serving others was his God-given purpose in life.
Preceded in death by his parents, fur babies, Sophie and Cleo, and his loving wife, Barbara, he is survived by children Michelle (Tim) Sovacool, Stephanie Matuch, Michelle (John) Large; grandchildren Alaina, Johnny, Chloe, Connor and Claudia; sisters Sharon (Dave) Moritz, Frances (Dave) Albright, LuAnn Lukezic; and former spouse, Sue Matuch.
Wayne was very spiritual and knew God had blessed him more than he ever deserved throughout his entire life. He and Barbara attended St. Francis de Sales Parish.
Per Wayne's request, there will be no services. Cremation has taken place and a private inurnment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery will occur at a later date.
