James J. Herold, lovingly known as “Jim” passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 19, 2025. Born in Barberton, Ohio on July 24, 1937, Jim was one of nine children of Joseph and Mary (Stevenson) Herold.
A proud graduate of Barberton High School (Class of 1955), Jim went on to serve his country as a distinguished member of the United States Army Intelligence Corps, where he oversaw atomic bomb testing in Nevada. He worked as a welder for Babcock and Wilcox and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Barberton, Ohio.
Jim was a man of deep faith and community spirit. He was an active member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church where he volunteered for funeral lunches, fish fry’s, and baking poticas and strudels. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
In retirement, Jim embraced life fully – spending time with loved ones and enjoying the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
Jim is survived by his wife and lifelong partner in “orneryness, Cathy, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, his children Kelly Herold, Adam Herold, and Erin and Mike Farnsworth. His grandchildren Luke and Caty Farnsworth, Haley and James Herold, Ryan Herold, and Shawna Schutte. He is also survived by his sisters Janet and Joan Herold, sisters-in-law Barbara Herold and Patty Herold, special cousin Cecelia O’Brien and the beloved “Rohr Girls”.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law Josephine Cartlidge; siblings George (Loretta), Charles, Robert (Colette), Dorothy Purdy (Larry), Patty, and Paul and very special cousin and friend Amelia Rohr.
Jim’s final weeks were filled with love and laughter, thanks to the incredible support of family and friends.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Crossroads Hospice, especially Allie, Marissa and Heather, for their compassionate care.
Calling Hours for Jim will be Friday, August 22, 2025 from 5-8 p.m. at the Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton. Jim’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1263 Shannon Avenue, Norton. Fr. Robert Jackson, Fr. Bill Browne and Fr. David McCarthy, Con-Celebrating. Private Burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
Jim’s legacy of love, laughter, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
