John Russo

July 6, 1928 — November 14, 2025

Barberton

A dear husband, father and nonno, John Russo, 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on July 6, 1928, in the small town of Fossalto, Campobasso, Italy, John carried a rich Italian heritage shaped by family, tradition, and a love of craftsmanship. He was the devoted husband of Mary, his steadfast companion and beloved partner for almost 63 years.

John learned tailoring as a young man before immigrating to the United States at 19, bringing with him determination and skill that would carry him far. He honed his craft in Akron, rising through the ranks at O’Neil’s Department Stores and eventually managing various departments for multiple stores. Whether dressing an old friend or a prominent executive, John made certain everyone looked their very best. Meticulous and proud of his work, he instilled the same ethic in his children and grandchildren, tailoring garments with care until the end.

While their families knew one another in Fossalto, it wasn’t until later as adults that John met Mary again in Toronto while visiting his dear childhood friend, her brother. Together, they raised three children in a home in Barberton grounded in love and devotion.

A captivating storyteller, John could summon the streets, hills, and voices of Fossalto so vividly that you could almost walk alongside him. His stories were best shared over one of his perfectly made cappuccinos - and he made sure that cup was always full. He delighted in gathering with family and friends, sharing meals, visiting loved ones, and bringing food to those he cared for. Summers were spent tending a flourishing garden, from which he took joy in preparing meals.

A proud Italian, refined, and gentle, John loved opera, and in his final moments, he was surrounded by those who adored him and the soaring voices of Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. His life and legacy will forever linger like the final notes of a beloved aria.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; his children Ginny Dickos (Alex), Johnny Russo, and Rita Russo; his grandchildren Cristina Luse (Evan), Alessandra Dickos, and Marissa Russo (Brian); his brother, Mario Russo; his brother-in-law, Antonio DeSimone (Maria); his sisters-in-law, Aldina DeSimone and Emilia DeSimone; many nieces, nephews and extended family he loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicolamarino and Virginia Russo, and his sister, Catherine Cornacchione.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 204 Sixth St. NW., Barberton on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 11:00 am, where John was a longtime parishioner. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Alexandros Nicolozakes, Stacy, Emily, Tina, and the compassionate staff of Hospice of Western Reserve in Medina for the exceptional care and kindness they provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Augustine Church or Hospice of the Western Reserve Foundation.
