BARBERTON---Joseph Patrick Murphy, 84, passed away on December 26, 2014 after a long battle with Dementia. Patrick was a graduate of Barberton High School and played on the 1947 undefeated football team. He also played football for Kent State University before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1953 he returned to the University where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and was a member of Theta Chi. He married Elaine Lauter, also from Barberton and they resided in Brunswick, Ohio for 29 years before moving back to the Barberton area. Patrick worked for State Farm for 35 years and was an active member of St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick and St. Augustine Parish in Barberton. He loved to play golf, watch football, read, dance, and play cards. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; son, William; granddaughter Angela; brother, Bernie; and parents, Lillian and Samuel Murphy. Survivors include his sister Rosalie (Robert) Danko and brother Jack (Carol) Murphy; daughter, Megan Murphy (Bret) of Virginia; son, Patrick S. (Christie) of North Carolina; grandchildren, Buffy, Jessica, Patrick and Jack and many nieces and nephews and friends. The family would especially like to thank the staff at the Village of St. Edwards for their care over the last seven years. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 204-6th St. NW, Barberton. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Calling Hours Friday from 5-7 P.M. at the SILVA-HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton, where prayers will be said Saturday morning at 9:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Charities of Summit County or St. Vincent DePaul Society.
