Kristine E. (Protich) Hornacek

BARBERTON--Kristine Hornacek, (nee Protich), 72, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous 15 year struggle with dementia.

Kristine was born on January 10, 1946 in Akron to Michael and Pearl (Wassity) Protich. She was a graduate of the 1964 class of Coventry High School. After volunteering for many years she found her calling at Weaver School where she retired after 22 years as an assistant instructor. She was an advocate for people with disabilities and an active coach in Special Olympics for multiple events. She was especially proud of coaching Developmental Olympics for children with severe disabilities. Watching her “kids” compete brought joy into her life. Family was the center of her life. She lived her life by setting an example for her children and grandchildren to be caring, compassionate and loving individuals.

Kristine was preceded in death by her parents Michael and Pearl; and brother Michael. She is survived by her husband of 50 years and caregiver of 15 years, James; son Jason (Patty) of Barberton; daughter Evelin (Jeff) Jenkins of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Michael and Victoria Hornacek and David and Eli Jenkins; sister Pat (Ron) Russell; brother Lincoln (Pat) Protich; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the family, friends and neighbors who so graciously gave of their time, help and support throughout Kris’ illness. Your kindness will always be remembered. Thank you to the staff at Barberton Adult Day Care who never forgot Kris and to Akron General Hospice for their end of life care, especially Debbie, Lori, Julie, Monica, Crystal and Wayne for their exceptional service, kindness and comfort they provided.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, March 9, 2018 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 204 Sixth St. NW, Barberton. Fr. Bill Browne celebrant. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Calling Hours will be held on Thursday from 4-7 P.M. at the SILVA-HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton.
