Mary Lou (Bodner) Spoonster passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 26, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. She was 77.
She is survived by her son William, his wife Julie, and their children Nathan and Andrew; her daughter Stacy and her fiancé Damon Hackworth; as well as her Sister-In-Law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and more friends than you can shake a stick at. Mary is also survived by her “other” children: Michelle Garro, Ericka Quinlan, and Steven Selnik – all of whom she loved as her own.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate William Spoonster Sr., her parents Joseph and Irene (Danco) Bodner, and far too-many friends and family.
Mary was loved by everyone she met and kind and generous to a fault. As a lifetime resident of Barberton, Ohio, she took pride in her hometown and always took the time to help out fellow members of her community. She loved to garden and travel and made sure to pass the love of these on to her children.
However, family was always the most important thing in Mary’s life. This was reflected in so many ways: from her years as a stay-at-home mom – crafting Halloween costumes and transporting her children from scouts to sports to doctor’s visits a plenty; to her time in the “family business”, working as an Executive Secretary at the Vocational Development Center for the Handicapped; and in her travels – both with the whole family as well as those with Bill over their 29 years of marriage.
After 25 years as an Executive Secretary for the law firm Renner, Kenner, Greive, Bobak, Taylor, & Weber, Mary devoted her retirement years to reconnecting with old friends through her work on the Barberton High School Class of 1965 Reunion Committee. She enjoyed going to tea or lunch with the ladies on the Committee and always talked about how much fun she had with them.
As Mary said recently, “I had a good life,” and will be deeply missed by so many. At this time there will be no services held. To help celebrate Mary’s life, please consider making a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society.
