MaryAnn Smrdel (née Cesen), age 94, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026 after a long, joyful life. She was born on September 22, 1931 in Cleveland OH to parents Peter and Frances Cesen. She married Frank B Smrdel on November 26, 1953 and the two built a beautiful life together in Barberton, Ohio enjoying 64 years happily married until Frank’s passing in 2017. MaryAnn is also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Stanley Cesen, and her son, John Smrdel. She is survived by children Frank R (Diana) Smrdel, Karen (Terry) Despot, Patsy (Terry) Petit, and David Smrdel, ten grandchildren— Gary (Rebekah), Nick (Megan), Randy (Rebekah), Andrea (Sean), Chris (Caitlin), Teresa (Jamie), Lisa (Kyle), Renee, Brad, and Jake, and ten incredible great-grandchildren—not to mention countless other family members and friends.
MaryAnn was a talented seamstress and loving homemaker. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, puzzles, and musicals. She found her greatest joy in being surrounded by people: her close friends and family most of all, but really anyone who was lucky enough to know her. She was a helper, and gave of herself often and gladly. An active member of her church, Prince of Peace, she donated both time and skill her to community, touching the lives of many children across the world through her dressmaking skills. Up until the day before she passed, there were dresses layed out in her sewing room in the process of being put together.
MaryAnn will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held in her honor at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1263 Shannon Ave., Norton for all who wish to pay their respects are welcome. There will be NO CALLING HOURS. Private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prince of Peace Church.
