Chief Michael C. Kallai, 57, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2010. Mike was born in Barberton and was an area resident all his life. He was a graduate of Coventry High School and a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Barberton. Mike worked for the City of Barberton Police Department for the past 32 years and was the Chief of Police for the past 13 years. He was a member of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, (OACP) Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE) Summit County Police Chiefs Association, Chairman of the Emergency Management Executive Committee of Summit County and a Board Member of Victims Assistance and Barberton Red Cross. Mike was a Graduate of the Southern Police Institute Class 96 at the University of Louisville and Police Executive Leadership Council Class 28 (PELC). Mike was also very proud to be an assistant wrestling coach at Wadsworth High School for the past 19 years. Preceded in death by his father George; Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years Jennifer; sons Michael (Meredith), Joe, and Zak (Mary); daughter Vanessa (Patrick) Williams; granddaughter Eleanor Williams; mother Ruth Kallai; brothers George (Frances), Arthur (Janice), Charles (Jan), Christopher (Debbie) and Gus (Renea); sisters Aline (Larry) Folden, Esther (Larry) Taylor, Marietta Kallai and Angel (Steve) Stobaugh; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Calling Hours will be held Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the SILVA-HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 204 Sixth St. NW, Barberton. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wadsworth Youth Wrestling, c/o John Gramuglia, 230 Maylawn Ave., Wadsworth, OH 44281 or Victim's Assistance, 150 Furnace St., Akron, OH 44304.
