COVENTRY TWP---Mildred (Emma) Vargo, 93, passed away April 7, 2013 at Magnolia Care Center. She was born in Barberton where she worked at the Diamond Match Company until she and her husband Frank built their home in Coventry Township where she lived for almost 60 years. Mildred worked briefly as a secretary in New York City for a firm whose offices overlooked Yankee Stadium. She would spend her lunch time watching the baseball game. She had four brothers and was the tom boy of the group and was an avid baseball player herself and won several medals. She enjoyed her baseball team the Cleveland Indians and was a true Indians fan. During WWII she became one of the famed "Rosie the Riveters" and was an inspector on the fuel tanks of the B-25 "Billy Mitchell" Bomber. She said the since her brother-in-law William Vargo was in the Army Air Force that she made "damm sure" that those gas tanks were perfect before she would allow them to leave the plant. She was an avid gardener and grew the loveliest of azalea's. Mildred also enjoyed her many trips to Hawaii to visit with her daughter and son and family and sailing the Hawaiian waters with them. Most of all she cherished the time that she spent drinking coffee with her best friend and confidant Ann Thomas of Barberton. Finally they are together now.
