BARBERTON---Richard M. Garrett, 81, passed away May 5, 2011 at the Hospice Care Center in Copley. Born in Barberton, Ohio February 6, 1930, to the late Curtiss and Wanda Garrett, he graduated from Norton High School in 1948. He was a member of the National Masonic Lodge no. 568 F&A.M., attended Columbia United Church of Christ and served on the Board of Directors for the Degenhart Glass Museum in Cambridge, OH. Richard served in the U.S. Army 1948-1953 and was selected to serve in A Company, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the Old Guard. He was promoted to Corporal of the Guard and walked guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, VA as well as participated in the inaugural ceremony of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After retiring from Seiberling Rubber Co., he was employed at the Akron Recycle Center. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golf, and in most recent years trap shooting. Most of all he loved his family and enjoyed the time they spent together. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Justine (Winebrenner); son Bradley R. (Marlene); daughter Beth (Mark) Winebrenner and grandson Bradley C. Garrett, all of Barberton; Aunts Darlene Cordray and Virginia Welty of Wadsworth; and extended family Gary and Debbie Sellers and Naomi and Jim Reed and family. Cremation has taken place at Richard's request. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011, 9:30 A.M. at the SILVA-HOSTETLER FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton, Pastor John Henniger officiating. Inurnment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Callings Hours Monday 6-8 P.M.
