Steven L. Kyer, age 71, died Thursday, July 28, 2016. Steve was born in Logansport, Indiana but lived most of his life in Norton and Barberton, Ohio. He attended both Norton and Barberton High Schools and graduated from Barberton High School in 1962. His first job was at Jimbo’s in Norton where he was introduced to the food service industry. Later, he worked for McDonald’s. He attended the University of Akron obtaining a BA degree in languages in 1971. He served in the U S Army for four years where he met and married Elizabeth (Trixie) Trostle. They soon had two children, Justin and Allyson. After the Army, Steve worked numerous sales jobs until he settled on selling insurance for Metropolitan Life, working his way up to Sales Manager. Eventually, he opened his own insurance agency in Norton, Ohio. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Barberton until it closed.

Steve was born with the gift-of-gab which eventually led him into politics. He was active in the Democratic Party and the South Summit Democrats. Steve had the distinct honor of serving as a Councilman on both the Barberton and Norton City Councils. He always had a unique perspective on issues. His tenacious presentation of his views often led to lively floor discussions.

Steve authored two books: one which reflected his views of God’s hand in our lives and the other, a very insightful look at the political issues in this year’s national elections.

In recent years, he teamed up with his friend, Russ Phillips, and created the Doo Wop Guys duo which performed in the Akron area. In 2014, the Doo Wop Guys performed at the Barberton Gazebo Summer Concerts pleasing one of the largest crowds that season.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Kathleen (Hersman) Kyer; brothers Jerome and Ernest Kyer. He was a loving father and grandfather survived by son, Justin A.
