Timothy Bryan Cox, DDS
September 6, 1952 - June 4, 2024
It is with broken hearts we share that on Tuesday, June 4, our beloved husband, father, grandpa, son, brother, and friend went home to be with his Lord and Savior after a sudden illness. We are extremely grateful for God’s mercy in sparing him from long suffering, but we will deeply miss him and long for more time shared together until we are reunited once again someday.
Tim is survived by his loving wife and partner of 28 years, Regina (McDonald) Cox; his daughter Lindsay (Scott) Hernandez; his son Adam (Sylvia) Cox; his stepson Timothy (Katherine) Oswald; his stepdaughter Lauren (Matthew) Macko; his grandchildren Asher and Owen Cox, Lydia Hollins, Gabriel, Jack, Julian, and Maddox Hernandez, Zoe and David Oswald, and Alex and Claire Macko; his father Kenneth Cox; his sister Patricia (Robert) DeLand; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and very dear friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie “Midge” Cox.
Tim grew up in Barberton, Ohio, and graduated from Barberton High School in 1971. He continued his education at THE Ohio State University, earning his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology (Class of 1974) followed by his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (Class of 1978). He was an extremely proud alum and a die-hard Buckeye!
Tim had an unwavering zeal for life and was passionate about everything he loved and involved himself in, especially his family and friends. You could always count on Tim to be boasting his love and adoration for his family, telling stories and giving updates on his kids and grandkids, whom he loved more than anything in the world. He would always share excitement for what he had planned and was doing next, and reflected on the get-togethers and fun times he enjoyed with friends. He made a point to attend every game, performance, and special event he possibly could, truly up until the very end. And not just for immediate family; if you were a friend, colleague, or patient and he was told one of these was happening for your family, chances are he’d come to support any he could.
Tim was fortunate to find a passion that became his career in dentistry, following his uncle and two cousins into the profession. He bought his first private practice in Orrville, Ohio, in 1980, later moving it to Fairlawn, Ohio, in 1986, remaining there and providing the greater Akron community with excellent dentistry for many years. One of his dreams became a reality when he became an Assistant Professor in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, sharing his expertise and helping young dentists hone their skills in clinics in preparation for their careers. He retired from private practice in 2020 and began working with the Dental Residency Program at Summa Health Akron Campus. He thoroughly enjoyed being a teacher and mentor at both and cherished the connections and friendships made. Through his entire career, he was extremely proud of the talented colleagues, amazing staff, patients, students, and residents that surrounded him. So many became like family.
Anyone that knew Tim also knows of his two other great passions: golf and his OSU Buckeyes. Tim was an avid golfer from a young age. He was a regular at several local courses, worked the grounds at The Ohio State University Golf Course, took many wonderful golf trips with buddies, and found great joy in sharing and spreading his love of the game with his family and friends. Tim also told everyone he met, “I’m a Buckeye!” He held season football tickets for 52 years and didn’t miss a home game until recent years, traveled to every away game and bowl game he possibly could, and loved inviting people to join him. He had more facts and stats stored in memory than most could fathom, and could often be found reading Bucknuts and recruiting reports, listening to sports radio, pretty much anything he could get his hands on to stay in the know. And he probably tried to make sure you were up to date, too.
Tim was very social and never met a stranger. As such, he also truly enjoyed getting involved in several clubs and organizations over the years. At Ohio State, he was a member of the Delta Chi and Psi Omega fraternities, and he became a life member of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Alumni Association and the Legacy Society of The Ohio State University President’s Club. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, and the Akron Dental Society. He was also a Master Mason and member of Mt. Akra Lodge #680. He was inducted into the Barberton High School Academic Hall of Fame in 2021.
We can genuinely say that Tim lived his life and each day to the fullest.
Per Tim’s wishes, we will hold a Celebration of Life to remember him. Please join us from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, June 17, at the Birdseye Barn at Western Star, 4229 Greenwich Rd, Norton, Ohio. There will be a brief service at 6:30 p.m., but in this time of grieving, we hope to find joy in a special evening of reflecting on a life well-lived and sharing the many beautiful and funny memories we all have of Tim.
In his memory, we ask that you please consider a donation to The First Tee of Greater Akron or Haven of Rest Ministries, both of which he supported regularly.
