Adelaide Young Obituary

BARBERTON---Adelaide Cadle Young, beloved wife, mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher, passed away at the age of 87 at her home in Barberton, OH. Adelaide “Adie” began what she knew to be a charmed life on August 1, 1934 in Charleston, WV. She grew up just outside of Charleston on a “gentleman’s farm” with loving parents and surrounded by doting uncles, aunts, cousins, and wild and tame animal friends. Adie’s mother was a teacher and Adie was a good student who liked school “even though all my teachers were Mother’s friends, how would you like that?” Adie capped off her high school scholastics by excelling in music, winning statewide honors as a flautist. After graduating from high school and business college, Adie matriculated to Eastern College in Philadelphia, PA. There, before the second week of classes was over she met the love of her life, Ralph Young. He was a tall, dark, handsome, and fun Religious Studies major from Elwood City, PA. Adie and Ralph were married in 1955 - just after Ralph graduated from Eastern, just before Adie graduated, and just as they followed the wayward wind to Ralph’s seminary studies in California. After seminary, service to three churches, and four children, Ralph and Adie moved to Barberton, OH in 1972. In Barberton, Adie kept her rowdy family nourished and nurtured in every way while also building a career in public education. She completed her postponed college work in 1984, graduating from Antioch College with a degree in Elementary Education. With degree in hand, she went on to teach in the Barberton school system for 17 years. A quiet disciplinarian, she was loved and respected by her students – many of which were 2nd graders that by school-year’s end had caught up to her in height. Adie and Ralph retired in 1997 and began following the wayward wind again. They criss-crossed the country several times pulling a small trailer and took their kids and grandkids to the ocean as often as possible, where they shared their love for sun, sand, water and marine organisms. When Ralph and Adie weren’t traveling, their home was the center of our family’s world. Adie also lured critters of all types to her back yard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ralph, and by her grandsons Teddy Sommers and Ezekiel Sommers. She is survived by her four children Jeff (Katie Franks), Joe (Carolyn), Jill Sommers (Brian), and Bob; by her grandchildren Alex Young (Katie), Dea Westfall, Adam Young (fiancée Lauren Bellamy), Jocelyn Keferl (Todd), Andy Westfall, and Sabrina Sommers; and by her great-grandchildren Rowen Keferl and Malcom Young. Adie said her life was charmed because she was surrounded by love her entire life. She knew how wonderful this was and worked tirelessly to make us all feel the same way. At Adelaide's request, she has been cremated, and there will not be a funeral service. She asked that her family gather for a time of remembrance and celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite organization, especially if they work to make the world more beautiful.
