Ann M. (Steese) Barnes
March 11, 1936 ~ February 14, 2023 (age 86) 86 Years Old
Ann Marie Barnes, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend went home to be with the Lord on February 14, 2023. She fought a lengthy battle with lung disease and died peacefully at home at the age of 86. Her son and his wife were with her.
Ann was born to Carl and Evelyn Steese of Copley, Ohio on March 11, 1936. A graduate of Copley High School, she enjoyed a long career in student accounts with the University of Akron before retiring in 1998. Ann was a long-time member of Barberton Wesleyan Methodist Church and most recently attended North Side Christian Church in Wadsworth.
Ann will be greatly missed by her family for her quick wit and lively sense of humor. She had the ability to come up with a response (generally sarcastic!) for any situation, bringing lightness and laughter to everyone around her. She was dedicated and loyal, and her son Paul says she was “the strongest/toughest person I’ve ever known.” Ann loved her family and found pleasure in having her grandchildren and great grandchildren visit. Her toughness and humor are both illustrated in her oft repeated statement to her son, “I don’t care if you come over...as long as
you drop off those kids!” Ann will be remembered for her pumpkin pies, baked beans, sauerkraut and especially for the brownies she was commissioned to bake for every family event. She will be missed by all of us, the memories evoking both tears and laughter—tears that we had to say goodbye, but laughter for her truly unique personality and the imprint it left on each one of us.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Bert; brother, Norman (Joan) Steese; and daughter-in-law, Brenda Barnes. She is survived by her son, Paul (DeeDee) Barnes; brother, Larry (Juanita) Steese; two grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica; two step-grandchildren, Haylie and Colton; three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
At Ann’s request no services will be held, but her family plans to honor her with a private graveside ceremony and a celebration of life in the summer.
