BARBERTON---Frank S. Porok, aged 92 years, passed away on August 27, 2021. He was born in Barberton, Ohio on January 22, 1929 to George and Josephine (Zalar) Porok. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George; sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Lawrence Maurer; and his nephews, Gregory and John Maurer. Frank is survived by his sister, Georgianne Thomas (David), nephews: Fred Maurer and Mark Thomas; nieces: Laura (Maurer) Sustar, Martha (Maurer) Beitel, and Laura Thomas along with numerous grand nieces and nephews.
A kind and generous man, he was everyone’s “Uncle Frank” He was proud of his Slovenian heritage. A life-long bachelor he cherished his family above all and was always happiest at large family gatherings where he was first in line for a HOT hamburger.
An avid sports enthusiast, he was a gifted bowler and golfer and followed horse racing particularly the “trotters.” His encyclopedic knowledge of baseball and golf history was legendary. “I don’t follow them like I used to but…”started many conversations.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a radio operator in the 101st Airborne Division in both Japan and Korea near the 38 Parallel. Quoting Frank, “I served 1 year, 11 months, and 29 days, but whose counting!!”
He retired from B&W in 1985 after 39 years of service saying, “I retired early to save a young family man’s job!”
