Joan M. (Durbin) Rothermel, age 87, passed away peacefully at her home on November 17, 2023, surrounded by family. Joan was born on June 8, 1936, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, the oldest of 7 children, and later moved to Kenmore, Ohio, where she graduated from Kenmore High School in 1955. Joan worked at Akron City Hospital, until she married Richard Rothermel, on September 2, 1961.
Joan enjoyed playing cards, bowling, gardening, cooking and baking. But what Joan most enjoyed was spending time with her family, and raising her 3 daughters, who were her pride and joy. Her home was always the place where extended family holiday get-togethers, July 4th picnics and Euchre tournaments were held. Joan and Richard also enjoyed vacationing, and traveled to the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, and several other U.S. states. Building the home she raised her family in also brought her joy and her soul will forever be there, where she was most happy.
She is in preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite and Maurice Durbin, brother Maurice Durbin, Jr., and brother-in-law Jim Herre. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Richard, daughters Lynne Canale (Dave), Sharon Rothermel and Joanna Lasso (Chris); grandchildren Andrew and Ellen Canale, and Madison, Morgan, and Meghan Lasso; siblings Michael (Becky) of West Palm Beach, Florida, Betty Kreps (Norm) of North Canton, Jim (Betty) of Green, Frances Herre of Kenmore, Larry (Debbie) of Richmond, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
A private service at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Haven of Rest Ministries.
