Sean W. Matheny, 66, of Clinton, OH, passed away on March 7, 2022 after a life of service to his community and family.
Sean was born in Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio on October 9, 1955. After graduating from Kenmore High School, he studied at Kent State University but soon joined Akron’s Police Training Academy. He began his career with the Akron Police Department in 1980. During his 24 years of service, he achieved the rank of Sergeant, the title of Detective, and became a certified polygraph examiner. A strong supporter of unions, he served as a Union Representative, Vice President, and two terms as President of F.O.P. Lodge 7. After retirement he founded and operated a private polygraph service, Matheny Polygraph L.L.C.
He was a man of many interests and talents. In his early life he was a Golden Gloves Champion. Later, this love of boxing transitioned to reporting, managing and training fighters, and ring announcing. He was adept at woodwork, crafting several pieces of heirloom furniture for his family. A talented musician, he played several instruments including guitar and trombone. He was a scout leader, and ran the local Police Explorers group. He also had a love of traveling, seeing much of the world.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 42 1/2 years, Cyndi; son, Aaron Matheny of Barberton; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Kelly Matheny of Norton; grandson, Jericho Matheny of Willoughby Hills.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, March 31, 2022 between 4:00pm and 7:00pm at Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Road West, Barberton, OH 44203. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Sean are invited to make a donation to the American Kidney Fund.
