William E. Helmick

William E. Helmick of Norton, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus in the morning of April 25, 2023 at age 86. Born in Shinnston, WV, he was the 12th and youngest child of Asa and Emma Helmick. After graduation, he moved to Ohio and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he became a very proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Having completed his military service, Bill went to work in Barberton at the Ohio Match, Sun Rubber Company and PPG Industries Research. Subsequently graduating from the University of Akron, he worked at Bridgestone/Firestone Akron Tech Center where he retired in 2004. Gardening, hunting and fishing were some hobbies at the top of his list, as well as enjoying his cabin on the river in West Virginia. Bill was a genuine “people person” and made many friends along his life’s journey. He served several years on Norton’s City Council and until his health began to dictate otherwise, he was an active member of Johnson United Methodist Church, Tadmor Shrine’s Legion of Honor, 82nd Airborne Division Assoc. West Virginia Chapter, Masonic National Lodge 568 and Barberton Shrine Club. Left to cherish his memories are his loving family; wife Mary; children, Pamela Helmick, Rod (Diane) Helmick and Debra (Jose) Sandoval; grandchildren James (Danielle) Helmick, Jennifer (Matt) Ridley, Ashley, Stephanie and Zach Helmick and Miranda Sandoval; great-grandchildren Olivia Helmick and Nora Ridley; sister Lola Jean Workman; and his furry little companion Tarrah. Bill's Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Johnson United Methodist Church, 3409 Johnson Rd., Norton. Rev. Tim Monteith officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Calling Hours Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Rd. West, Barberton and One Hour Prior to the service on Monday AT THE CHURCH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Johnson United Methodist Church.
